Stepmania è il rhythm game open source. E' possibile scaricare innumerevoli plugin, sfondi, musiche e temi. Personalizzabile in tutti gli aspetti.

NanaOn-Sha ha inventato il genere nel 1996 con il videogame per Sony PSX Parappa the Rapper. Occorre seguire il ritmo imposto dalla canzone, a forza di freccette psichedeliche che piovono dal video, e il vero divertimento si innesca usando un dance pad.

Le arcade oramai sono popolate solo dai "Bemani", ovvero i cabinati degli ultimi rhythm game di moda.
