Shuji Nakamura ha vinto il Premio Nobel per la Fisica nel 2014 per la sua ricerca che lo ha portato a creare il led blu.

Il primo led, rosso, fu creato negli anni '60, e poco dopo fu creato quello verde. Con l'arrivo del led blu si sarebbero finalmente potuti creare i monitor e le lampadine a led, incredibilmente più efficienti di quelle a incandescenza. Ma per tutta una serie di motivi il led blu era quasi impossibile da creare, e ci sono voluti 30 anni e l'ostinazione, l'inventiva, l'abilità e la meticolosità di Shuji Nakamura per riuscire nell'impresa e sbloccare la rivoluzione tecnologica dei monitor che viviamo ad oggi.
